GACKO COAL BASIN
Gacko coal basin is locatedin the Gacko field in the northeastern part of Herzegovina. It occupies about 40 km2 at the altitude of about 940 m, in a typical carst region. This region characterizes with very specific climate conditions with temperatures ranging from -30 to +370 C, with the average precipitation of 1.750 mm on an annual basis. This terrain is mostly plain. The basin is divided into four exploitation fields: Western exploitation field, Central exploitation field, Eastern exploitation field and Caprock coal zone.
First works on coal exploitation in Gacko began in 1954, on the outcrops of the main coal seam, while in 1982 the mine of lignit „Gračanica” was commissioned with the annual capacity of 1.800.000 tons of coal and 3.200.000 m3 of overburden in the area of the Western exploitation field. On the stripe mining „Gračanica” the continuous work technology was applied through which satisfying results were achieved in terms of production of overburden and coal, which, together with new balance reserve of 476.339.950 t, puts Gacko power system in row with the biggest such systems in Republic of Srpska, prompting continuous new explorations and investments in the development of the basin.
Coal reserve in Gacko are estimated to exceed 400.000.000 tons, while it is assumed that this reserve will have the work of two blocks of 300 MW power secured for the period of the next 100 years. The explorations showed that the Gacko coal is of the high quality and that it is profitable to be exploited. Recently, the technology of coal production has changed. Applying the newest scientifical researches, the trend is now strongly focused on the principle of selective excavation, which results in obtaining much cleaner coal on the depot and is without waste-rock. In the end it resulted in TE production of 280 MW, the number of delays has been decreased, while failures are more sparse.
Taking into account what has been explored up to now, today’s available resources of coal in the Gacko basin correspond to the heating potential of about 3.380.000 x106 kJ for surface exploitation, which secures the work of more thermo blocks.

Prva faza Termoelektrane, blok snage 300 MW pušten je u pogon 9. februara 1983. godine. Glavna oprema Rudnika i TE Gacko je :
· Elektro postrojenje - Energoinvest - Sarajevo i Tehnopromexport - Moskva
· Automatika, HTP i DU - Energoinvest - Sarajevo
